A space for knowledge | Juwon Ogungbe

Personal experiences accumulate and form repositories of knowledge. Knowledge is indeed, power, but it isn’t the essence of a person’s character.

Inasmuch as we all have connections to social groups, beginning with our families, it is fair to resort to terms of categorisation for purposes of description.

Labels and categories are often used as reasons for denying access. There is no doubt that some folks are more suitable for handling certain tasks than others, but there is a tendency in some quarters to overemphasise the significance of this notion.

Culture, traditions and customs serve as safety nets in social interaction. Awareness of the finer points of one way of living or another is useful for making and presenting symbols. Skills and talent for expressing feelings and thoughts are yet another set of attributes.

Everyone has a palette to draw from, to create symbols and make impressions. Each person’s way of telling a story should be seen as valid.
