Attitudes towards change | Juwon Ogungbe
Many years ago, when I first started making music and drama in schools, I composed songs for an assembly performance, including one about the ability humans have to change.
The song lyrics were as follows: ‘ People can change, just the same way as the seasons change. From winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to autumn, autumn to winter, people can also change their ways.’
I remember a teacher telling me that I had managed to pack an important message into a simple, but attractive package that could be used as an effective teaching tool. The process was new to me at that point in time.
A few folks who were small children way back then are still part of my circle of friends. They are adults now, making their ways in the world. Who knows how much of a difference my teaching tool made to their understanding of a life’s journey?
Yet, I find that the song’s message has a lesson for me, right now. Change is a constant factor in people’s lives. One has to learn to accept amendments, alterations and new developments, whilst also maintaining a sense of personal integrity.
