Perceptions of work | Juwon Ogungbe

In a discussion group, we read the opening paragraphs of a literary work which is regarded by many as a cornerstone of the canon of a particular culture. I would like to think everyone present did this with an open mind, since we hadn’t been forewarned about the task.

I read the text and noticed something that did not feel right about the metaphor used as the novel’s title, in relation to the dilemma or issue of conflict cited by the author.

Since this passage was chosen to serve as the starting point for a conversation, I felt it was alright to mention this awkward artistic choice. In doing so, I managed to ruffle quite a few feathers.

Who was I to question the artistry of such an important cultural figure? I was made to feel my comment was impertinent and disrespectful. Meanwhile, I was sure about my feelings and wasn’t willing to withdraw my remark.

The main lesson I learnt was the discussion group wasn’t right for me, but there was also another issue to consider. One man’s classic is another man’s flawed piece of work.
