I remember an era when many social observers were preoccupied with the balancing of style and content in cultural production.

Did the zeitgeist of that time eventually outline a clear credo? It is possible that something was agreed upon, but I must have missed out on absorbing the essence of the idea.

Living in London — a global marketplace, it seemed as if people were interested in the pick ’n’ mix ethos of an international food hall. Anyone aiming to develop a durable body of work had hardly any terms of reference.

What would happen if the preoccupation was amended, to search for the balance between the personal and the universal?

If this was to happen, each person asking for attention would have to nail their true colours to the mast. There would be nowhere to hide.
