Removing layers of conditioning can take a long time. Beneath all the preconceived notions, we all want to survive and thrive where and whenever we can.
Privilege has a lot to do with comfort zones. It must be nice to know that so much can be taken for granted in a lifetime. Others are expected to acquiesce and follow.
No condition is permanent however. People left on the margins of cultures eventually come to realise that so much of what they accepted as the ‘done thing’ can be amended, or even ignored.
Seeing the pros and cons of the mental constructs, sensible folks start thinking about sifting the wheat from the chaff. They can apply the lessons learnt to the creation of newer concepts.
Status levels only exist when there is a buy in from all the relevant stakeholders.
